    From downstairs, Wireman called cheerfully:

I had pictured a bald, skinny, professorial man
with blazing brown eyes - an Italian Ben Kingsley
    - but Dario Nannuzzi turned out to be fortyish,
plump, courtly, and possessed of a full head of
hairI was close on the eyes, thoughThey didn't
miss a trickI saw them widen once - slightly but
perceptibly - when Wireman carefully unwrapped the
last painting I'd brought, Roses Grow from Shells
The pictures were lined up against the back wall
of the gallery, which was currently devoted mostly
to photographs by Stephanie Shachat and oils by
William BerraBetter stuff, I thought, than I
    could do in a century
Although there had been that slight widening of
    the eyes
Nannuzzi went down the line from first to last,
then went againI had no idea if that was good or
badThe dirty truth was that I had never been in
an art gallery in my life before that dayI
turned to ask Wireman what he thought, but Wireman
had withdrawn and was talking quietly with Jack,

Nor were they the only ones, I realizedThe end
of January is a busy season in the pricey shops
along Florida's west coastThere were a dozen or
so lookie-loos in the good-sized Scoto Gallery
(Nannuzzi later used the far more dignified term
"potential patrons"), eyeing the Shachat dahlias,
William Berra's gorgeous but touristy oils of
Europe, and a few eyepopping, cheerfully feverish
sculptures I'd missed in the anxiety of getting my
own stuff unwrapped - these were by a guy named
    David Gerstein

Fear fluttered in my stomachThe Seeker was alive; the Seeker was here
I shouldn't have been afraid of her
Of course, it made sense to be afraid that her disappearance would bring the other Seekers

But now she'd vanished in the middle of her searchThat changed everything
Her vehicle had been moved far away, left in the desert on the other side of TucsonIt looked
as though she'd disappeared in the same way it was believed I had: pieces of her bag left torn
nearby, the snacks she'd carried with her chewed open and scatteredWould the other souls
    accept such a coincidence?
We already knew they would notWould the search become
    more intense?
But to be afraid of the Seeker herself… That didn't make much senseShe was physically

@@@@@It would be comforting if he could believe his religion was the cause of their antipathy, but other problems issued from it, other portents of future failureHe wanted to close his arms over his head, tuck up his knees, and shut out the clamant bickering about him, the incessant hacking of the machetes, the murmur of conversation, and the necessity to keep straining and exerting himself through one pain-racked hour after anotherThe jungle was protective suddenly, a buffer against all the demands that would be madeHe longed to lose himself in it, become separate from the men"I don't know," he saidIt seemed important to stop arguing
They fell silent, lay again on their packs, relapsing into their private thoughtsMinetta's weariness colored his reverie, made him sadHe thought of Italy, which he had visited with his parents when he was a childVery few memories remained; he could recall the town in which his father was born and a little of the city of Naples, but the rest had become clouded
In his father's village the houses tumbled down a hillside in a network of tiny alleyways and dusty courtyardsAt the foot of the hill a little mountain stream lashed over the rocks and raced along vigorously into the valley belowThe women would carry their laundry down in baskets in the morning, and wash the family clothing on the flat rocks of the bank, kneading and slapping and scrubbing with the ancient absorbed motions of peasant women at workThe boys in the town would fetch water every afternoon from the same stream and carry it up the hill, moving slowly, their small brown legs cording with labor as they toiled up the footpath to the town
Those were about the only details he could remember, but they stirred himHe seldom thought of the town, and he had forgotten almost all the Italian he once knew how to speak, but when he was moody or reflective he would remember things like the heat of the sun between the walls of the alleyways, or the acrid fermy odors of the dung on the fields
Now, for the first time in many months, he brooded about the war in Italy and wondered if the town had been destroyed in bombardmentsIt seemed almost impossible to him; the little houses of rock and plaster must remain foreverHe was very depressedHe had seldom thought of returning to that village, but now, transiently, it was what he wanted most to doJesus, that place all ruined, he thoughtFor a few seconds his mind held in montage all the wrecked towns, the corpses on the road, the perpetual muted thunder of artillery over the horizon; it even contained a place for this patrol on an island in another oceanEverything's being smashed all over the worldThe magnitude of the idea was too great; his mind veered away, careened back giddily to the rock on which he was sitting, absorbed itself once more in the wretchedness and fatigue of his bodyAaah, it's all so big you get lost in it

Still from a great distance, Kamen was saying:
"Ilse was the one who called and suggested a doll
    599
as a presentThis was after she and her sister
    talked on the phone
Of course it was Ilse, I thoughtI was aware of
the steady murmur of conversation in the gallery,
like the sound of the shells under Big PinkMy Oh
gosh, how nice smile was still nailed to my face,
but if someone had poked me in the back just then,
I might have screamedIlse is the one who's been
on Duma KeyWho's been down the road that leads
    past El Palacio
As shrewd as he was, I don't think Kamen had any
idea that anything was wrong - but of course he'd
been traveling all day and was far from his best
Wireman, however, was looking at me with his head
cocked slightly to one side and his brow furrowed
And by then, I think Wireman knew me better than
    Dr
"She knew you already had one," Kamen was saying
"She thought a pair would remind you of both
daughters, and Melinda agreedBut of course,
    Lucys are all I have-"
"Lucys?" Wireman asked, taking the dollHer pink
rag-stuffed legs dangledHer shallow eyes stared
    600
"They look like Lucille Ball, don't you think? I
give them to some of my patients, and of course
they give them their own namesWhat did you name
    yours, Edgar?"
For a moment the old frost descended on my brain
and I thought Rhonda Robin Rachel, sit in the
buddy, sit in the chum, sit in the fucking CHAR
Then I thought, It was RED"Just like the country singer
"And do you still have her?" Kamen asked
"Oh, yes," I said, and remembered Wireman talking
about the Powerball, how you could close your eyes
and hear the numbers falling into place: Click and
click and clickI thought I could hear that now
The night I'd finished Wireman Looks West, I'd had
visitors at Big Pink, little refugees seeking
    shelter from the stormElizabeth's drowned
sisters, Tessie and Laura EastlakeNow I was
meant to have twins in Big Pink again, and why?
Because something had reached out, that was

@@@@@Like a Mondrian, the furniture was stark in its simplicity,
the colors bold and predominantly red, black and deep green; the chairs, sofas and tables only
vaguely resembled chairs, sofas and tables—they seemed more suitable for use in spacecraft
As if by rote, both Conklin and the Russian immediately began examining the tables, ferreting
out handwritten notes, a number of which were beside a mother-of-pearl telephone on top of a
curved, thick dark green table of sorts
“If this is a desk,” said Alex, “where the hell are the drawers or the handles?”
“It’s the newest thing from Leconte,” replied Krupkin
    “The tennis player?” interrupted Conklin
“No, Aleksei, the furniture designerYou press in and they shoot out
Conklin did so and a barely discernible drawer sprang loose from an all but invisible crack“I’ll

Krupkin’s miniaturized radio suddenly erupted with two sharp beeps from inside his breast

    has just entered the building
    “The concierge?”
“Nowhere in sightAleksei, get away from thereLavier is on her way up
“You want to hide?” asked Conklin facetiously, turning the pages of a telephone notebook
“I’d rather not start off with instant hostility, which will be the case if she sees you riffling
    through her personal effects
“All right, all right Alex returned the notebook to the drawer and closed it“But if she isn’t
going to cooperate, I’m taking that little black book
“She’ll cooperate,” said Bourne“I told you, she wants out, and the only way out for her is with

    “Money?” asked Krupkin“What money?”
